Towards sustainable and responsible fisheries and aquaculture!

What is Fish & Planet?

Fish & Planet is a social enterprise accelerating the transition to sustainable and responsible fisheries and aquaculture in Japan and globally by working with local, small-scale fishers and aquaculture farmers.

Why sustainability in fisheries?

Based on FAO's assessment, the percentage of stocks fished at biologically sustainable levels has been decreasing and the underfished stocks accounted for only 6.2 percent. Overfishing not only causes negative impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, but also reduces fish production, which subsequently leads to negative social and economic consequences.

Why responsibility in aquaculture?

Projections indicate that by 2050 the population of the world will rise to more than 9 billion. Aquaculture is the solution to meet global food demand while reducing the pressure on wild capture fisheries. But when aquaculture is not well managed, it can have adverse impacts. The faster the aquaculture industry grows, the greater its potential impact on the environment and society.

Why small-scale fishers and aquaculture farmers?

Based on FAO's estimation, small-scale fisheries and aquaculture contribute more than half of global harvests and employ more than 90 percent of people employed in the industry. However, they have been left out of the growing momentum in implementing the sustainable fisheries and aquaculture due to lack of resources and access to markets.
